The Key to Looking and Feeling Your Best!

St. Louis Thread Lift (FeatherLift) Specialists

The surgeons at BodyAesthetic Plastic Surgery have been trained and certified in a procedure called a ThreadLift or FeatherLift. This procedure is sometimes referred to as a non-surgical facelift that can be done in less than an hour. Although it cannot accomplish the same degree of "lifting" as an actual facelift or brow lift, the subtle effects of a ThreadLift can produce a visible improvement in facial areas that have begun to sag. The ThreadLift is designed to treat drooping areas such as the brow, cheeks, jowls, or neck.

The average time required for a ThreadLift ranges from 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the number of areas being treated. Some patients choose to have only 1 or 2 areas of the face lifted, while others have their brow, cheeks, jowls, and neck done in one procedure.

The ThreadLift is performed by a surgeon in our office under local anesthetic and requires 1 small incision on each side of the face that is placed behind the hairline. Tiny surgical sutures called threads are inserted under the skin in precise locations with a small hollow needle. The same type of suture has been used for decades in brain, heart, and abdominal surgery and has a long history of safety. The only difference is that this newly-developed thread contains tiny "barbs" to secure drooping soft tissues in place after they are pulled upward or "lifted" into a more youthful position.

Because the suture is threaded beneath the skin, it cannot be seen, though you may be able to feel some threads with your fingers. Some patients have reported the sensation of being stabbed by one of the "barbs" during the first few weeks, but this soon stops and is not dangerous. The lifting effects of a ThreadLift are immediate, but expect some bruising (usually minor), swelling, and discomfort. The swelling gives the face a distorted appearance so the final results may not be evident for a few weeks.

Your face will probably appear unnatural at first so we recommend that patients plan to take several days off work. Although some claim a FeatherLift is a "lunch hour" facelift, we doubt anyone would want to go about their business immediately after the procedure.

For 3 weeks after a ThreadLift, the face needs to be protected from trauma and disruption of the barbed threads, which means facial animation, mouth movements, and rubbing or pressure on the face should be avoided as much as possible.

The material used for the barbed sutures is non-absorbable and therefore considered permanent, though the threads can be removed. The lifting effects, however, are not permanent. Because this procedure is new, we are still uncertain how long the visible improvements might last.

Once the threads settle in and the tissue redrapes, other people will not realize you have had any type of facial procedure. Instead, they may think you look happier, more rested and refreshed, or have tighter skin. The best results are often achieved in combination with injected tissue fillers or Botox.

Some patients choose a ThreadLift or FeatherLift as a way to postpone a full facelift. It may also be combined with surgical procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) or neck liposuction. If you might be interested in this procedure, your surgeon can evaluate whether you are a good candidate.
